On Wednesday, the Flanders for Senate campaign released a new TV advertisement entitled “Gasbag”. The ad, which highlights Sheldon Whitehouse’s line of questioning at Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing, is the campaign’s third broadcast spot of the election cycle.
“Sheldon Whitehouse’s performance at the Kavanaugh hearing was an embarrassment not only for Rhode Island, but also for the nation. The Senator’s juvenile attempt to attack Judge Kavanaugh by calling attention to the slang and nicknames that were used in the judge’s high school yearbook is a reflection of the senator’s willingness to sacrifice truth in pursuit of political expediency,” said Flanders. “If Sheldon Whitehouse had any interest in the truth coming out at the hearings, he would have asked questions concerning the accusations that Dr. Ford has leveled against Judge Kavanaugh. Instead he attempted to embarrass an esteemed judge through old yearbook quotes from the judge’s high school days about sophomoric references to drinking games and flatulence. Serious allegations should be dealt with in earnest- not with childish antics such as the ones that Rhode Island’s junior senator displayed.”
“The people of Rhode Island are tired of political theater and partisan posturing,” Flanders continued. “They want competence and they want representation that fights for the relevant facts to come to light. Sheldon Whitehouse is not that senator.”
